Cognitive psychology has demonstrated that the way knowledge is structured in memory determines the ability to retain, recall, and use it to solve problems. In the present study, we hypothesized that the use of MOL leads to better understanding of the topic among students, which can be observed through better student performance on assessments. Students were divided into two groups: group 1 was taught insulin and diabetes mellitus through didactic lectures and a self-directed learning session, whereas group 2 was taught insulin and diabetes mellitus through didactic lectures and MOL.
Memory palaces for insulin and diabetes mellitus were generated by students under supervision of the teacher and taught by students as well. A questionnaire survey and open-ended questions were given to the participants. Group 2which underwent didactic lectures followed by a MOL interactive session, showed significantly improved performance on the assessments compared with group 1which had been taught through didactic lectures and a self-directed learning session.
Descriptive analysis showed that all students found MOL to be a helpful technique. Eleanor A. With these thoughts in mind, we designed the present study using the hypothesis that the use of MOL leads to better understanding of the topic among the students, which can be observed through better student performance on assessments.
The topic covered was insulin and DM. Each lecture spanned 60 min. After the didactic lectures had been completed, 28 students were randomly selected and then taught insulin and DM through the MOL technique. Continued participation in the study was, in any case, entirely voluntary. Students were allowed open textbook reference and were allowed to take the completed worksheets home. This was a self-directed learning session under instructor supervision.
The entire class was, thus, studying the same topic during the same time, albeit in different ways. In the case of our study, three MPs were generated on the following topics: the mechanism of action of insulin, actions of insulin, and DM. MPs were generated by two second-year medical students under the supervision of the teacher. This procedure differs from the standard variants of MOL 327where the MOL is generated by the subject themselves. The rationales for this modification were twofold: 1 to reduce the inaccuracies of facts to be recalled as insulin and DM are relatively difficult topics to learn and students had attended only two didactic lecture on the topics before this session and 2 to facilitate the students, as it may be difficult for them to completely generate a MP independently after only a single introductory session to the mnemonic technique.

Also, reading speeches to an audience was frowned upon. If you wanted to be a successful orator, you had to give it from memory. Giving a speech or a sales presentation from memory conveys competence and authority.
Just imagine yourself, facing an audience and giving a 30 minutes talk to the point, completely without using notes. How did they do it? The Romans mentally placed the key points of their speech in locations along a familiar route through their city or palace.
To remember a key point, they represented it by a concrete item, and visualized that item somehow interacting with a particular location. While giving their speech, they just mentally walked along the same journey through their memory palace, and in each location retrieved the item representing the next key point they wanted to talk about.
The method of loci is essentially a visual filing system, allowing you to memorize and recall a virtually unlimited number of items in a fixed order. Each location serves as a hook, to which you visually connect whatever you want to remember.

In an independent samples design, there are two separate groups tested: one with the treatment and one without. Depressed people tend to recall negative memories more than positive ones, so the researchers asked people to place positive memories into memory palaces. On a surprise test a week later, the newly-trained mnemonists were able to recall the positive memories, while the other group had more trouble with the recall.
Depression impairs the ability to retrieve positive, self-affirming autobiographical memories. To counteract this difficulty, we trained individuals with depression, either in episode or remission, to construct an accessible mental repository for a preselected set of positive, self-affirming memories using an ancient mnemonic technique—the method-of-loci MoL.
Participants in a comparison condition underwent a similar training protocol where they chunked the memories into meaningful sets and rehearsed them rehearsal. Both protocols enhanced memory recollection to near ceiling levels after 1 week of training.
However, on a surprise follow-up recall test a further week later, recollection was maintained only in the MoL condition, relative to a significant decrease in memories recalled in the rehearsal group. There were no significant performance differences between those currently in episode and those in remission. The results support use of the MoL as a tool to facilitate access to self-affirming memories in those with depression.

One addition that I would like to try is to link the memory journey with specific music that I would only listen to when visualizing the journey, similar to the experiment I described here. Interestingly, one of the studies outlined the question of if the method of loci would be used by older adults after they were trained in it since it requires a high level of attention. Mild cognitive impairment is a condition that sometimes, but not always, progresses to Alzheimer's disease. Some research has demonstrated that using mnemonic techniques, including the method of loci, for people with MCI is effective in improving their ability to learn and remember information.
One of the likely reasons that the method of loci is effective is that it uses elaborative rehearsal of information, rather than simple rote rehearsal. Elaborative rehearsal involves manipulating the information by adding meaning and using it, rather than simply looking at a list and repeating it. The method of Loci is perhaps less known than other mnemonic strategies such as chunking information or developing letter or word mnemonics.
However, it has demonstrated its effectiveness in several research studies and thus may deserve more attention as a legitimate way to improve the ability to learn and recall information.
